christine maggiore is the founder of an organization called "alive & well aids alternatives" that questions commonly held beliefs about HIV, namely that it doesn't necessarily lead to AIDS. christine has been HIV positive for 14 years, doesn't take AIDS drugs, and had two kids after being diagnosed. she found herself in the middle of great controversy when her daugher, eliza jane, died suddenly. according to the coroner's report, eliza jane died from AIDS related pneumonia, although christine and her doctors feel that it was more likely an allergic reation to antibiotics, and there were inconclusive elements to the case. regardless of whether you agree with christine (and without being a doctor or biologist it's difficult to say) it's hard not to empathize with a mother who's lost a child.
