tony's work involves something he calls 'the cocktail party prolem' - that is, how we hear certain sounds and not others; making sense of one conversation in a crowded room and blocking out other things. to do this he studies hearing in rats, and has them do tests in special little soundproof rat rooms, where they press buttons corresponding to where they heard the sound come from. apparently it only takes a week or so to teach a rat to do this reliably.
