"We were immersed in the medicine of your life from the first moment. For someone who wanted a baby, something like this really immerses you into motherhood. You really feel it as completely as it could be felt. I thought those days were amazing and I was deliriously happy. I don’t know about the doctors, since no one expected you to live, but I was just so confident that everything was going to be okay. We had a number of miscarriages and you were the only one that made it. A little early, but you made it.

"And also it’s been really interesting watching you work on this book because of your total involvement with the kids you’re photographing and how it’s put your medical problem in perspective to you. You’re dealing with these exceptional children. They look so strong and courageous and vulnerable all at the same time. It must be everything you can do to not continually say 'I’ve been there. I’ve been there. I understand.' Do they think you understand? That’s a great thing. All of us grow up hoping somebody understands who we are or what we’re going through. }}}
