i know i spend a lot of time on
this site complaining about how awful it is to use PCs, and i stand
by that. but it's hard not to be impressed with bill gates. here's
a guy who has more power to positively affect problems in the world
than some nations, and he actually steps up, takes responsibility
and does something about it. and it's gratifying to know that at the
end of the day he's just a big nerd like the rest of us. as soon as
i gave him something to do (a pen and legal pad) he retreated into
his own head and the media face just fell away. it was a really beautiful
thing to see, actually. he was doodling a math proof. i'd tell you
what it meant, but i've got no idea. thanks to martha bardach, dietmar
liz-lepiorz and lev grossman at time magazine for this one, and to
