this is from a shoot i did for psychology today magazine at the very end of last year. posting it late, since it just recently published. sometimes these things take a while. psych today does a column called “field guide to [insert personality type]“ which basically talks about different types of people and interviews someone who they feel is an example of that type. before i met kevin wilby all i knew is that the article was to be a “field guide to the enforcer“. i was expecting him to be a security guard or a bouncer or a cop, not an elementary school teacher! i thought of kevin pushing around a bunch of eight year olds and showing them who’s boss, but really it turns out that he enforces rules and educational principals with the administration of his school just as much as with his classroom.

you definitely need a certain sort of temperament to survive being in a small space with thirty little kids day after day. you need to be forceful, kind, committed and open. i certainly got the impression of those characteristics from meeting kevin. then again, i’m a total pushover for anyone who shows up to a photo session with a cowboy hat.

my thanks to the city of sylmar and the month of december for providing us with really nice clouds in the sky. and, of course, thanks to claudia and ed at psychology today magazine for the assignment.

No, he just uses super long laces (he’s my dad).

These pictures are so rad! I think the top one is my favorite, because of the old-west-sheriff vibe.

I got really excited when you posted about him. Thank you!

No problem! I always enjoy being a lackey.

Oh, by the way, one of the photos I took at your shoot actually won a contest and was in a show! Strange but funny, hmm?
