dan farino, beverly hills, calif. 1.24.08

Written on March 1, 2008

dan farino has a job title that should confer him a lot of internet street cred: “chief systems architect for myspace”. you couldn’t tell it from talking to the guy, who’s incredibly easy going, or from looking at his office. the guy in the cube next to him has five monitors. five. in contrast, bill gates only has three monitors. what the hell is this guy doing that he needs more screen real estate than bill gates? this just makes me think that dan better get more monitors pretty soon. that’s a good yardstick of techie-sucess, isn’t it? i only have two monitors.

this is my second shoot at myspace. the first one was hemanshu nigam, who was the chief security officer. i didn’t catch how many monitors he had. we weren’t allowed anywhere near his office. likely due to security. myspace has an army of publicists, most of whom it seems exist to dump poor photographers in highly unphotogenic locations, blame it on “security” or “company policy” and then proceed to wait around looking bored and playing with their blackberries until fifteen minutes later they loudly declare that the shoot should be wrapping up because they “have a meeting”. oh wait, that’s every publicist. why they think no photography could possibly occur without someone totally uninvolved hanging around doing nothing, i’ll never know.
