i find the notion of running for
office a very strange thing. that is, it takes a very particular kind
of person to actively want to be involved in campaigning, and i'm
definitely not that kind of person. it almost seems like the act of
trying to get elected turns you into a publicist, which as we all
know is the worst sort of fate. people talk of not trusting politicians,
or more specifically, not trusting liberals or conservatives or what
have you. but nobody talks about the kind of person who would want
to be a politician in the first place. truthfully speaking, political
issues are generally far, far too complex to get into during a political
campaign. the sad fact is that for most issues there just plain isn't
a simple, pat, sound-byte-ready solution that can be immediately absorbed
and understood by everyone, and for this reason the general public
(who are really only half-listening anyway) tend to think it all sounds
like bullshit. elena popp was running for state assembly, and even
admitted that the whole process felt kinda strange to be in the middle
of. maybe local politics is more honest because less people are watching,
but probably not. then again, she didn't win. |
