richard alatorre was a city councilman in los angeles, and a state politician before that. he left office a few years back amidst a hazy sort of scandal involving real-estate and drug use, but now he's got his life back on track and is enjoying a kind of pseudo-retirement. he takes walks around the rose bowl for meditation and gets to spend time with his family. i always find it far more interesting to photograph politicians who aren't running for something. they're a lot more genuine when nothing is at stake, and alatorre couldn't have been more amiable or pleasant. he didn't even mind when i kept pressing him to inch out further on the diving board.
