thomas keller makes one HELL of a donut. he is the executive chef/owner of the world famous french laundry in napa valley, arguably the finest restaurant in america. he's a rockstar to other chefs. this was shot for the gadgets column in the sunday telegraph review. the paper had called keller and asked him what his favorite kitchen gadget was. apparently it was this potato cooker from the early 1900's. it looks like something out of flash gordon, and was apparently invented to bake potatos before someone came up with tin foil. it's not too practical for a restaurant chef, since it only bakes one potato at a time, but i think he likes the kitcsch of it more than anything else. since i'll never be able to afford a meal at the french laundy, and he didn't offer to feed us, we stopped down the road at the bouchon bakery, which keller also owns. i bought a five dollar donut, and man, was it good. it bore absolutely no resemblance to any other donut that has previously existed on earth.
