okay, anyone who knows me knows that i am an art cynic above all else. i don't care much for conceptual art, or art pretension, but tim hawkinson is making me rethink my cynical ways. his exhibit at LACMA is outstanding. amazing, inspiring, and above all it has the one quality that i find so much "art" to be lacking: it's funny! ordinarily, if you told me you made a sculpture of a bird from bits of your fingernail clippings, i would've been out the door. but it's a GOOD fingernail bird scuplture. it's so nice to see an artist who finally realizes that all of this is just a little silly, too, and embraces it. these are not the kinds of sculptures/drawings/etc that can be appreciated in pictures. you have to go see it. it's drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, sound, machines and electronics. the guy seems to be good at just about everything, which would piss me off if he wasn't also as nice and easygoing as can be.
